Historic and Natural Districts Inventory Form
Unless indicated below, this is a transcript of
the original Society for the
Preservation of Long Island Antiquities/Town of Brookhaven survey form. Corrections to obvious typographical and
spelling errors have been made. Corrections to factual errors,
updates or comments on the information are either enclosed in [square
brackets], or will be clearly indicated as updated material. Since
most of the surveys were conducted in the late 1970's and early 1980's,
much of the information reflects that time period.
Sites with an Inventory Code suffix of "S" are supplemental
sites not included in the original surveys.

4-Significance |
|
|
The Oaklawn Cemetery in Brookhaven is at the north end of Arthur Avenue, north of Montauk Highway. It resulted from a meeting of twelve residents, held at the home of Nathaniel Miller, on March 20, 1890. He and James H. Post gave six acres of land for a nonsectarian burial ground. There had been a small Methodist Episcopal Cemetery on the west side of Beaver Dam Road, across from the High School, maintained in connection with the Methodist Church. Many old headstones from that cemetery and from family graveyards, such as those from the Rose and Sweezey fanmilies, were relocated in Oaklawn. (Bigelow)
