DeWitt Clinton Miller
.. This photograph was found in an album apparently originally belonging to Laura C. (Miller) Ashby. The pictures were identified by stick-in labels which seem to have been written by one of her children, most likely either Jennie or Jane. This photograph was labeled "Uncle DeWitt Miller."
This is perhaps one of the earliest photographs in the Foundation's "Miller Family" collection, since DeWitt Miller died in 1852. John Draper was still experimenting with photography at New York University in 1839 and I didn't think studio photography took off until ~1860. —Marty Van Lith
