#B003 Union Cemetery, Middle Island Hamlet, Suffolk County, Brookhaven Town, NY, USA

Notes:

Middle Island "Union Cemetery" is on the south side of Middle Country (State) Road (Route 25) opposite the old "Middletown Presbyterian Church", Middle Island, NY. The oldest part of this Cemetery, about 1 acre, is the northeast section, and was approximately one acre and opened about 1765, directly opposite the church. In it are an unknown number of unmarked graves-quite a few having rough field stones for markers. A newer section to the west of this older section contains five acres and was sold by Joshua Swezey. The cemetery was incorporated in 1869. It is #3 on the Town of Brookhaven Historian's Cemetery Listing.

Interments of residents of Fire Place (now Brookhaven Hamlet) and South Haven may be found here, especially from the mid nineteenth century and earlier -- likely due to the close association of the Middletown (Middle Island) and South Haven Presbyterian Churches, and the lack of a community cemetery in these South Shore hamlets until the late 19th century.

The northwest section of Cem.3, separated from the main part by a piece of uncleared land, is the newest section, but contains some dates prior to 1883, possibly by stones having been moved into it from older private graveyards. This section is designated as #3a on the Town of Brookhaven Historian Cemetery List.
