  	Patchogue Advance, 24 June 1982: JOHN MITCHELL EWING, 91, a longtime prominent resident of Brookhaven, died Saturday at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Mr. Ewing was born on January 28, 1890, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He had made his home in Brooklyn and Bellport prior to moving to Brookhaven. After attending the MacKenzie School in Dobbs Ferry, he served with the Army Corps of Engineers, both on the Mexican border with General John Pershing in 1916 and in France in World War I. He was a devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church in Brookhaven and received the Bishop's Cross for distinguished service. He served for many years as a member of the Brookhaven Fire Department and as president of the Oaklawn Cemetery Association. Surviving are his widow, the former Helen Elizabeth Morrow, whom he married in 1929; his sister Janet Ewing Reddall of Brookhaven; his brother, Meredyth H. of Katonah; and by many nieces and nephews. His son, John Mitchell Ewing, Jr., was killed in action in Korea. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, Brookhaven, or to the Brookhaven Fire Department.

Singer of Greensburg, Miss Mary Ewing of New York, Miss Ellen Ewing of Wale Forrest, N.C., and Mrs Hastings Reddell of Brookhaven; and a brother, William DeWitt Mitchell, former attorney general of the United States in President Hoover's cabinet. Her father was Supreme Court Justice William Mitchell of Minnesota. Mrs. Ewing's early life was spent in Minnesota. Following her marriage she resided in Uniontown and Pittsburgh, later coming to Bellport.
