shot and killed Apollos Rose |
- On the evening of March 31, 1859, Apollos Rose, 22, "a colored man," and Mary A. Hawkins, 16, "a colored girl," domestics employed by William Roberts, Esq., left his house to attend church at Poosepatuck. Unfortunately, they dallied along the way, retiring a few feet from the roadside. Nelson Brewster was out hunting with his dog, and when his dog barked and he heard the rustling in the bushes, he thought it must be game and fired his gun in the direction of the noise, instantly killing Apollos Rose and wounding Miss Hawkins. A coroner's inquest was held and Nelson Brewster was "severely reprimanded" by the jury for his carelessness. (See full article.)
