- The house which has come to be known as the Isaac Seamon house is opposite the Old South Haven Presbyterian Church. In both the 1850 and 1860 censuses, Isaac W. Seaman was living with his parents, Abraham F. (b. abt 1808) and Mary Seaman. On the 1873 map of Brookhaven Hamlet, the I. W. Seaman's property (Site ID Br09C) is shown adjacent on the north to A. F. Seaman (Site ID Br09D). A. F. is undoubtedly his father. The 1858 map does not indicate any Seaman properties in the Hamlet, so this source is not helpful (many known residents of 1858 are not indicated). The original survey form does not indicate from where the construction date was derived (perhaps the interviews?).
The 1840 U.S. census record was the earliest indication of a "Seaman" living in Fire Place, Town of Brookhaven--that of the Abraham Seaman family. U.S. census records from 1790 forward were examined, including the indexes for the Town of Brookhaven, and the detailed enumeration records of the area between Bellport and Mastic, and no "Seamans", or possible alternate spellings of the name, were found, either in the indexes, or the examined detailed pages. (While the enumeration pages did not themselves define the area, the examined pages were selected based on names of families known to have been residents of the area.)
Although some local history commentators have indicated that the Seaman family first settled in Fire Place as early as 1779, the census enumerations do not support this conclusion. Most likely, the Isaac Seaman house was built by Isaac after 1860 and before 1873.
It should be noted however that the Long Island Genealogies database indicates that Jonathan Seaman (Isaac's grandfather) died in "Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY." and that all Jonathan's children and his grandchildren of the line of interest here were born in "Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY," referencing "The Clock Family Bible," (Suffolk County Historical Society Register, Vol.XV, No.2, 1989, pg.43-48).
