- This fact, because of its date, was likely not this Oliver. Most likely it was his grandfather, Nathaniel, who inherits and comes to own much of the "Smith" property in Moriches and East Moriches following the death of his father, Richard (ii). It is placed here for eventual proper association.

- He was one of the first trustees of the "Temporalities of the congregation of Southaven" at the time of its incorporation on January 19, 1802 following the Revolutionary War. The parish was first established about 1740 as a daughter to the Town Church at Setauket. While the church building was located in South Haven to the west of Oliver's plantation in East Moriches, at the parish extended across the entire south Town of Brookhaven region. Oliver was from the easternly end of the parish.

- Oliver Smith at the time of his death owned the westerly neck in the "Moriches Patent" adjoining Terrell's River known as "Moriches Neck" and also called "Oliver Smith's Plantation." Oliver Smith died intestate leaving four children and his lands to be partitioned in 1821. South Country Road (Montauk Highway) extended across the property from west to east. The northwest section adjoining the Terrell River on the north side of South Country Road was allotted to the oldest daughter Hannah Smith Pelletreau. The northeast section was allotted to Mary Smith, The southeast section, extending to Moriches Bay on the south side of South Country Road, was allotted to the oldest son William Smith. The southwest section, adjoining the Terrell River and extending to the bay (about 200 acres) was allotted to the youngest son Josiah Smith.
