Census |
1790 |
Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY [7] |
- [I believe that the Jeffrey Bruster of this census is Charles Jeffrey Brewster. He does not appear in the census as "Brewster," and it is unusual that such a prominent landowner would not appear. Jeffrey Bruster appears in the listing approximately where one might expect to find Charles Jeffrey Brewster. Bruster is an alternate spelling of Brewster that can be found in other old records. The census 1790 record is not inconsistent with what is known of the family.] The census records one male 16 and older, no males under 16, five females, one other free person, and one slave.

Notes |
- He was known mostly as Jeffrey Brewster.
Charles Jeffrey Brewster inherited a large tract of land from his father in what is now central and eastern Bellport -- both within the modern incorporated village and the wider modern postal district. On his death, the land was divided among his three daughters -- Mary, Anne, and Catherine. Mary's share, the eastern section, was sold to Charles Osborne in 1827. Anne's share was sold to Henry Gardiner, then resold to Solomon Livingston. Catherine's section was split; the eastern half was sold to Polly Woodruff and the western part to Matthew E. Woodruff and Henry Hulse, Jr. This latter section covered the central part of today's Village of Bellport. It was sold again, in 1829, to Captain Thomas Bell. (Bigelow).
