Norman Nelson of Brookhaven Dies at Age 93
Brookhaven—Norman Nelson, 93, died Tuesday at his home on Mott lane here after an extended illness.
Mr. Nelson was born in Ravenswood and lived in Astoria and later, in Flushing. In 1906, Mr. Nelson's parents bought the farm on South Country road which is now the home of his brother, Desmond Nelson. The Norman Nelson family spent 21 summers there and in 1928, when Mr. Nelson retired as auditor of the New York city Water department, they moved to a new home on Beaver Dam road, and then, a few years ago, to Mott lane. Mr Nelson also was associated for many years with Childs & Humphries, New York city mortgage brokers.
Mr. Nelson was graduated from Columbia college in 1884 and received a law degree at Columbia in 1891. He was one of the last three survivors of the class of 1884. He wrote considerable poetry and was often called upon as "class poet" to read his verse at reunions. He was also greatly interested in music and started the first orchestra at Columbia college. He played the cello until just a few years ago. As a young man, he rowed in crew races and was always a sailboat enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Matilda M. Nelson; one brother, Desmond, two sons, Norman F. Nelson, Jr., and Alfred Nelson, and three grandchildren, all of Brookhaven.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today in St. James Episcopal church, where Mr. Nelson had long been a member, with the Rev. Frederick Chapman, officiating. Cremation will be at Washington Memorial park, and interment will be in the family plot at Green Wood cemetery in Brooklyn at a later date.
