Francis was a "private soldier at the Battle of Long Island. He enlisted April 1776 in the company from Suffolk County, Long Island, NY and was in action at the Battle of Long Island. Original muster roll of Town of Brookhaven (formerly Fireplace) Long Island, contains this record; Francis Barteau among 57 privates under Colonel Josiah Smith of Moriches, Long Island and Captain Selah Strong; also his receipt for one gun, nineteen cartridges. Services recorded in "Long Island Refugees", page 1007.
