Ann Swartz Wiswall, a resident of Brookhaven hamlet since 1957, passed away at her home on December 17,2014 at the age of 92.
She was born in 1922 in Canandaigua, New York, attended Syracuse University and Columbia University, earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Columbia in 1945, and then working as an architect in New York. City. She married Richard H. Wiswall, Jr. in 1946. They lived for two years in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and then moved to Mt. Sinai, New York in 1948, when Richard accepted a position at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The family moved to Brookhaven hamlet in 1957.
While she continued to work part-time as an architect, Ann and Richard raised five sons. As time allowed, she pursued her interests in art and music, producing landscapes, portraits, and other works with pen and ink, graphite pencil, pastels and watercolors, playing recorder in local ensembles, and singing in the alto section of her church choir. She was a longtime member of and served in various positions for Old South Haven Presbyterian Church, the South Bay Art Association, the Fireplace Literary Club, the American Recorder Society and its Long Island branch. She also enjoyed playing bridge and discussing political, social, environmental and ethical issues.
Ann was especially loved for her easygoing way of welcoming neighbors, friends, relatives, and everyone she met, and for her genuine interest in their concerns. Ann appreciated what really mattered in life, used her exceptional talents to accomplish much, and did so with sincere humility and respect for others. She will be greatly missed.
Ann Wiswall is survived by her son Thomas, his wife Dorothy, their son James, daughter-in-law Sarah, and daughter Karen; by her son John, his wife Julia and their children Celeste and Aaron; by her son Richard, his wife Sally, and their children Peter, Kuenzi and Flint; by her son-in-law Thomas (husband of her late son Benjamin), and their children Alexander, Annalise and Augustus; by her brother John Swartz and his wife
Marge; by her sister Katherine Penfield, widow of Jeff, and by many nephews, nieces and cousins. Ann was also survived by her faithful feline friends, Katie and Domino, who stayed by her side through the end.
Ann Wiswall was predeceased by her husband Richard (1916-2004) and by two of her sons, Stephen (1947-1997) and Benjamin (1961-2012).
A memorial service to celebrate Ann’s life will be held at Old South Haven Presbyterian Church (South Country Road at Beaver Dam Road, Brookhaven), on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. A visitation was previously held on December 20, 2014 at the Ruland Funeral Home, 500 North Ocean Avenue, Patchogue, New York. Dr. Richard H. Wiswall, Jr., 88, of Brookhaven, died on October 9. He graduated from Harvard and earned a master's and doctoral degree in chemistry from Princeton University. Dr. Wiswall enlisted in the Army during World War II and worked on the Manhattan Project. He continued his research career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Brookhaven National Laboratory Department of Nuclear Engineering, retiring in 1979. Dr. Wiswall also pursued interests in photography, literature, theology and history and supported environmental and humanitarian causes.
He is survived by his wife of 57 yeaqrs, Ann Swartz Wiswall; sons Thomas, John, Richard and Benjamin; children-in-law, Dorothy, Julia, Sally and Thomas; sister Hope Griffin and grandchildren, James, Karen, Celeste, Aaron, Peter, Kuenzi, Flint and Alexander. Dr. Wiswall was predeceased by his son Stephen in 1997.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Ruland Funeral Home, Patchogue. A memoial service will be held at Old South Haven Presbyterian Church, South Country and Beaver Dam roads, Brookhaven, on Saturday, October 16, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Old South Haven Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 203, Brookhaven, NY 11719, or a charity selected by the donor, and would be appreciated by the family.

Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Wiswall and sons, Stephen, Thomas, John, and Richard have moved from Mt. Sinai to their new home on Beaver Dam road, which was formerly owned by Mrs. Una Bolton.
