  "Blue Shutters," the country home of Edna Woolman Chase and Dr. Frederic W. Bancroft .. This house was built by Edna Woolman Chase, editor of Vogue Magazine in the 1920s after she had spent summers in a boarding house on Beaver Dam Road. Later it was occupied by the prominent surgeon Dr. Frederic W. Bancroft of New York City. This document is the Brookhaven/South Haven Site Datasheet Br05A on the house, and includes photographs.

  
  

• Notes

  Married: This appears to have been Dr. Bancroft's second marriage, as he was age 22 (about 1903) when first married. Residence: Originally a summer and weekend home, the Bancrofts moved full-time from New York City to Brookhaven in 1956. In 1958, they were forced to moved from their Brookhaven residence back to New York City, largely due to Dr. Bancroft's failing health. In 1961, they sold their Brookhaven residence. The Bancrofts actively participated in the civic and social affairs of Brookhaven hamlet. They are frequently mentioned in local newspaper accounts throughout their residency. In addition to the Brookhaven home, they also had a cottage, "Skyline," at Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia, on the Bay of Fundy.
