  Robert Carman House, South Haven, NY .. This document is the Brookhaven/South Haven historic site data sheet on this property. It is believed to have been built by Robert Carman in the mid-19th century, owned by Walter and Mabel Hotchkin in the early 20th century, and operated by Gardner Murdock during the second quarter of the 20th century as a Summer inn, restaurant and dance club.

  
  

• Notes

  Married:  Mabel and Walter were married at Christ Church in the Borough of Manhattan. They apparently had no children. Residence: The historical record is somewhat ambiguous as to whether or not Walter B. and Mabel Hotchkin resided in this residence. If they resided there, it was likely as a summer residence. The 1915 map records "W.B. Hotchkin" for the property. In 1916 it was leased by Mrs. Mabel Hotchkins to the Town of Brookhaven as an isolation hospital for the treatment and care of children suffering from infantile paralysis. 1927 newspaper accounts refer to the property as the "old Hotchkin estate." In 1920, Mabel lived in Brookhaven hamlet with her father and sister. The 1920 census recorded her residence as being on South Country road; however this is likely an error. Adjacent and nearby households are known to have been situated on Beaver Dam road; she was not enumerated on the nearby page of residents in the hamlet of South Haven. By 1927, Mabel was deceased. Gardner Murdock's lease (see reference) was perhaps from her estate. A deed search on this property has not yet been done.
