Rev. David Rose's Pocket Watch
Rev. David Rose's Pocket Watch
.. While Miss Louise (sic) Carman of South Haven was not in costume at church or at the tea, she had with her one of the most interesting articles in the collection. That was a watch which had belonged to her great-great-grandfather, "Priest" Rose, as David Rose, who was pastor of the South Haven church from 1766 to 1798, was known.

The watch is known as a "bull's eye," being almost spherical in shape, set in a detachable silver case, with the face much like a "bull's eye." The watch is unique in that it has a calendar hand, instead of a second hand, which points to numbers one to 31 on the rim of the dial. It also has figures one to 60 for the seconds, as well as Roman numerals for the hours. There is a story that Priest Rose dropped the watch in Little Neck run one day when he was riding horseback from the parsonage in Brookhaven to the church in South Haven. Although the watch was not found until the following day, it is said that it was still ticking, as the case was water-tight. The watch was made in London and the gold filigree work in the back is said to be a lost art among jewelers today.

* While some have said that the person on the right is Tom Poole, Poole family members indicate that the man pictured is not Tom—"he simply did not look like that."  Stanley Grodeski (1907-1988), a boat builder at Sam Newey's boatyard, is said to have identified the individual as Al Hotchkin (1907-1993).

South Country Road

..Br06A.1-S. This view of South Country Road is looking easterly from a location a short distance west of the upper going over of Beaver Dam creek (approximately from where the Brook Store is now sited). Where the main road curves is Valentine's corner (now the Memorial Triangle park), with Fire Place Neck road leading off to the right.

South Country Road

.. Br06A.1-S. South Country Road from just east of Beaver Dam Creek (Br01.1-S) at the going over, looking westerly. Note that there still is a ford, in addition to culvert and pedestrian overpasses, which would allow livestock to refresh themselves with a drink in the stream. To the left, about where the white fence begins, is the future site of the Brook Store (Br07) after its move (sometime soon after 1915) from further east on South Country Road. The house seen further to the left is no longer extant--some suggest it is the old William "Sid: Hawkins house.

South Country Road

.. Br06A.1-S. Looking westerly from Beaver Dam Creek and Valentine's Corner. The 1915 Belcher Hyde map of Brookhaven hamlet indicates a W.S. Hawkins residence on the south side of South Country a short distance west of the upper going over of Beaver Dam creek. "W.S. Hawkins" is believed to be "William Sidney (Sid) Hawkins." While the building itself is no longer extant, it is believed to be the residence that is pictured on several photographic views of the going over of Beaver Dam Creek and South Country road, looking westerly.

South Country Road at Valentine's Corner
South Country Road at Valentine's Corner

.. Br06A.1-S. Looking easterly toward the triangular park formed by the intersection of South Country and Fire Place Neck. roads, now known as Memorial Park. The view is from the "Post Office," which was a small addition attached to the Valentine's "Brook Store." The house in the background to the right is the Valentine House (Br30B). Just visible in the background to the left is the Ketcham House (Br06A) and their farm barn, now converted to a private residence.

The date of the picture is likely between 1916 and 1920.  While the post card is postmarked Aug 22, 1922, the WWI memorial cannon, which was erected in the park in 1920, is not visible.  The Valentine house, visible in the distance, was move about 1916.  Therefore the scene seen on this post card must have been photographed between 1916 and 1920.
