.. The house is likely the Valentine house (Br30B) before it's move (modern site of the Brook House Br06). House in background is likely the Ketcham homestead (Br06A), later to become the Desmond Nelson home. The photograph from Hugh Byrne was likely taken at the same time as her photograph found in the Post Morrow Foundation archives (note her dress). Hugh Byrne is the current owner of many of the Valentine family's photographs.

"Old Gerard House"
This is only picture I know of showing home where Osborn Shaw's grandmother, [Caroline] Armanda Gerard, was born.
EVB

EVB was Edna Valentine Bruce.  Nettie would have been her stepmother.
The Gerard homestead was on the north side of South Country Road, just west of Beaverdam Creek.  It has Brookhaven/South Haven Historic Site ID Br07.0-S.   It is no longer extant. This picture, then, was taken with the camera facing west, with one of the Valentine trout ponds in the foreground.

Old Neck Road (perhaps Fire Place Neck Road)
Old Neck Road (perhaps Fire Place Neck Road)
.. While the post card is labeled "Old Neck Road," its location is uncertain. Consensus is that it is probably Fire Place Neck Road looking north from near its south end at Beaver Dam Road. Fire Place Neck was part of one of the oldest early Brookhaven Town roads, stretching from Setauket on the north shore across the Island to the Great South Bay at Fire Place (Brookhaven Hamlet), and included roads in Brookhaven Hamlet now known as "Old Town Road," and "Bay Road."

One Family Occupation Army—3 Sisters Overseas with WAC (l. to r.) Sergeants Elizabeth Kuzmech, Mary Hampton, and Sophie Kuzmech

Believed to be the only three sisters overseas with the military forces, three former Brookhaven sisters—Sergeants Mary Hampton and Sophie and Elizabeth Kuzmech—recently celebrated their first year in Frankfurt, Germany.

The first three sisters to enlist together, the girls joined the Women's Army corps about a year and a half ago and were stationed in this country until a year ago.  Then all three signed up for overseas duty.

Recently Sgt. May Hampton and Sgt. Elizabeth Kuzmech flew to this country for a short furlough on a plane with General Omar Bradley, who has just completed a tour of Europe.  The sisters visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Kuzmech, in Saratoga, Pa., and while there were visited by Mrs. Warren Brady of East Patchogue.

The girls had many facts of interest to relate about life in Frankfurt, stating that the poverty and bleakness are difficult for Americans to believe on first sight.  American cigarettes are at a premium and bring the most astounding valuables and services, they said.  One curious fact they mentioned was that Germans do not appear to bear any resentment toward the presence of Americans in Germany.  Acording to the girls, the Germans are courteous and respectful.

Sgt. Hampton will appear in the motion picture, "Berlin Express," as a WAC with Merle Oberon.  The picture is expected to be released soon.

.. As a result of Puleston's efforts, the use of DDT was banned throughout the United States, helping to save from extinction in North America what is said to have been his favorite bird, the osprey. He produced many drawings of birds, which works are widely collected.

Post Boat 'Sea'
Post Boat "Sea"
.. Brookhaven Hamlet has had a long nautical heritage, both for commercial and pleasure boats. In 1912, James H. Post purchased this craft from a boat builder in Bay Share. It became a fixture in the Hamlet, first docked at Squassux Landing and later at a slip on Beaver Dam Creek at the rear of his daughter and son-in-law Elisabeth and Tom Morrow's home on Bay Road.

The people in this picture are unidentified, although one of the women is likely Louisa, his wife. While the picture is said to have been taken by James Post, the man in the boat, while faint, bears a resemblance to Post.
