Rev. Abner Reeve
Rev. Abner Reeve

"This mortal part was interred in the graveyard, just in rear, or to the east, of the site of the old Meeting House, on the hill, where he so often stood, for many years unto the Lord and his people. At the head of his grave stands a slate-stone slab, some three or four feet high, on which are engraved these words:

'The Rev'd
Abner Reeve
Died May the 6th
1798, in the 91st year
of his age.

Farewell, dear friends;
We part in pain,
But hope to live
And meet again.' "

Grout, In Times of Old.

Theodosia M. Smith gravestone
Theodosia M. Smith gravestone

Theodosia M. Smith was the daughter of Theodosia Smith nee Carman of South Haven, NY. (Theodosia Carman was the wife of a Seth Smith.)
Theodosia Carman was the sister of Hannah Carman (1785-1861).
Theodosia,  Hannah and Samuel were all children of Samuel Carman Sr.
Hannah Carman married William Smith of the Manor of St. George, Mastic, NY (1777-1857).
Hannah and William had a daughter, Lydia (1810-1898). (William Smith's mother was Lydia Fanning.)
The daughter, Lydia, married David Gelston Floyd (1802-1893).
So Lydia and Theodosia were first cousins. Their mothers were sisters.
Lydia died two years and nine months after Theodosia died.
This is why she is buried in the David Gelston Floyd plot in Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.

William Wells gravestone.
William Wells gravestone.
Charles Wells Hayes comments: "In the old Burial Ground of Southold, near the edifice (Presbyterian) which occupies the site of the first meeting house, and not more than ten or twelve yards from the west end of the Cemetery, is the tomb of William Wells, a substantial, structure of brick and covered with cement, and now (1876) after the lapse of two centuries, in perfect preservation, thanks to the reverent care of his descendant in the sixth generation, the late William H. Wells, of Southold. The top of the tomb is a single slab of dark brown stone, five feet by two and a half, and four or five inches in thickness, completely filled by the curious inscription, a facsimile of which is here given, photographed from the rubbing taken by me Oct. 13, 1875."
