The 1915 Belcher Hyde map of Brookhaven hamlet indicates a W.S. Hawkins residence on the south side of South Country a short distance west of the upper going over of Beaver Dam creek. "W.S. While the building itself is no longer extant, it is believed to be the residence that is pictured on several photographic views of the going over of Beaver Dam Creek and South Country road, looking westerly.

    • Possessions: 1860, Fire Place (now Brookhaven Hamlet), Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY; real estate valued at $500

    Notes:

    Census:
In his household were one male 26-45 (Leveret), two females under ten (one of whom could have been Parnal), and one female of twenty-six and under forty-five (Catherine).

While Leveret is listed with other known Fire Place residents, the enumerator in 1820 appeared not to have recorded the families in consistent geographic order.

    Census:
In his household were one male under five years of age (which could have been John D.), of forty and under fifty (likely Leveret), one female of five and under ten, one female of ten and under fifteen, one female of fifteen and under twenty (which could have been Parnal), and one female of thirty and under 40 (likely Catherine).

He was listed between Francis Barto (Barteau) and Caleb Post. The Post residence, still extant, was on South Country Road just southwest of Beaver Dam Road (Historic Structure ID Br09B). The Barteau residence, now destroyed, was further northeast on South Country Road (Historic Structure ID Br07.1-S).

    Census:
In his household he had one male 5 and under 10 (likely David of the 1850 census), one male 10 and under 15 (could have been John D.), one male 15 and under 20, one male 50 and under 60 (likely Leveret); one female 40 and under 50 (likely his wife Catherine).

    Census:
In his household were Catherine and young man, David (age 16). He was listed adjacent to Charles G. Hawkins, suggesting the same residence as 1840 near the intersection of South Country Road and Beaver Dam Road.

    Census:
In his household was his wife Catherine. He was listed between a John D. Reeve (age 34) and David Reeve (age 26), likely the David of the 1850 census. Other nearby entries suggest that Leveret and Catherine were living in the same residence as previous censuses.

    Died:
[In the 1870 censu, his wife Catherine was living with her son John D. Reeve, suggesting that Leveret had died between 1860 and 1870.]

Leveret married Catherine Brown, ^ before 1813. Catherine was born about 1794 in NY; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Catherine Brown, ^ was born about 1794 in NY; and died.

    Other Events:

    • Census: 1850, Fire Place (now Brookhaven Hamlet), Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY
    • Census: 1860, Fire Place (now Brookhaven Hamlet), Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY
    • Census: 1870, Fire Place (now Brookhaven Hamlet), Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY

    Notes:

    Census:
She was living with her son, John D. Reeve.

    Notes:

    Married:
[I have inferred from census data and other information that Parnal and John D. were children of Leveret and Catherine Reeve. Even though Parnal and John D. were never listed by name in Leveret and Catherine's household, having established their own families by the 1850 census when this information was first recorded, earlier census enumerations are consistent with their being in the household (although there is some ambiguity as there are family members enumerated on later censuses which do not appear on earlier censuses). John D. is recorded as being a shoemaker as was Leveret. The John D. and Leveret residences were near to each other in the later census listings. Parnal and John D. were said, by George Perley Morse, a knowledgeable Brookhaven Hamlet historian in the 1940's, as being siblings.]

    Notes:

He was called "Big Gus" to distinguish him "Little Gus" Augustus Hawkins, the youngest son of David Hawkins, also living in Fire Place at the time. They were second cousins.

Hawkins vol II states that Augustus Hawkins was " 'actually [the] natural born son of 143 [Ruth Hawkins] per Osborne Shaw before [her] marriage to Charles Rice,' which corresponds with the footnote under Ruth (143) Hawkins that reads, 'Before her marriage she had a 'natural' son, Charles Augustus (39-3001) Hawkins .... His father may also have been a Hawkins.' "
