    Military:
William N. Ackerly was a private with Company D, 2nd N.Y. Regiment. While the family appeared in the 1850 census for the area that likely was Fire Place hamlet (now Brookhaven hamlet), by 1860 (and likely throughout the Civil War period and thereafter) the family was living in Patchogue, NY.

William married Mary E. Whittington in 1870 in Suffolk Co., NY. Mary was born on 5 Mar 1847 in Franklinville, Cattarague, NY; died in 1927 in Patchogue, Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY; was buried in Patchogue, Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

[The 1850 census record has the family surname as Ackley or Achley. Larry Boddy indicates the family surname is often found with a variety of spellings. He suggests Ackerly as being the most common.]

    Census:

[In the household in 1840 were 2 males under 5 years, one male 5-10 years, and one male 20-30; one female under 5 years, one female 5-10, one female 10-15, one female 20-30, and one female 50-60. The 1840 census is in general agreement with the family as later reported in the 1850 census; the eldest daughter, Sarah, probably having married and is established in her own home. The older woman is likely either Lemuel's or Clarissa's mother. Also on the census page are several Moger's (Lemuel's wife's birth surname.). While I have not yet done an analysis of the 1840 census, this page does not appear to be in Fire Place. As son Henry is reported to have been born in Blue Point abt 1841, this may be the area of this census.]

Also living in the Ackerly household in 1850 were James Russel (age 20) and Phebe Russel (age 18). [Phebe is likely Lemuel's daughter.] The census indicates that they were married within the previous year.
