Heading Definitions - 1850 Census

Fields bolded are columns in the 1850 Census Population Schedule, numbered as indicated.  Fields in italic are my additions to the table.

1-Dwelling #:  Dwelling houses numbered in the order of visitation.

2-Family #:  Families numbered in the order of visitation.

Modern Address:  Where I can determine the modern street address of the dwelling, I enter it in this field

3-Name:  The Name of every Person whose usual place of abode on the 1st day of June, 1850, was in this family. A "?" in this field indicates that the name was not fully legible.  A name in {braces} suggests the maiden name of a married woman if I've been able to discover it.  Use this surname to look-up the individual in the Hamlet People database.

4-Age:  Description - Age

Maturity:  Since all males 15 and older reported their profession, and most children appear to have stopped attending school about age 15, I have considered all persons age 15 and older to be "adults" and those younger to be "children."

5-Sex:  Description - Sex

Sex:  Translation of letter notation, i.e., Male, Female

6-Color:  Description - Color [w or blank = white, b=black, m=mulatto]

Race:  My interpretation of the census enumerator's record.

7-Profession:  Profession, Occupation, or Trade of each Male Person over 15 years of age. [The professions of women were not reported.]

8-Value Real Estate:  Value of Real Estate owned.

9-Birth Place:  Place of Birth, Naming the State, Territory or Country.

10-Married last year:  Married within the year.  ["True" indicates that the individual took marriage vows within the last year; "false" that the individual did not.  A count would therefore be of those recently married.]

11-School Last Year:  Attended school within the year.  ["True" indicates that the individual attended school within the last year; "false indicates that the individual did not.]

School Age:  Children between the ages of 3 and 15.

12-Cannot read/write:  Persons over 20 years of age who cannot read & write.  ["True" indicates that the individual (age 20+) cannot read or write; "false" indicates that the individual can read and write.]

13-Other:  Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper, or convict.  ["True" indicates that the individual has one of these conditions; "false" indicates that the individual does not.  The comment will describe the condition more fully.]

Comment:  A comment on the original entry, either by the census enumerator or by me.  My comments will be in [square brackets.]

LinksI am building a database of the genealogies of people in Brookhaven Hamlet, including their ancestors and descendents. If a database record exists for the individual, clicking on the Hamlet People hyperlink will take you directly to the individual's record in it.  Individuals in this database marked with a ^ following their name were known to be residents of the hamlet.
Where I have found other significant hyperlink references associated with the individual, clicking on the individual's Name in this column will take you to it.
