Comment: While of not particular good quality, this picture shows the original "front" of the house before the porch was added. It is also interesting to note that at this time the house appears to have been painted white -- although this could be just a trick of the poor quality post card.

Comment: Painting of the Miller House.

Label on back reads:
Painted by Alice Boughton of George Miller House, given to E. Puc by Susan Boughton, 11 February 1952.

The painting is probably dated about 1930-1940 based on the white color of the structure.

The verso of the painting seems to give the artist's name as "Boupleton." No "Boupleton" could be found in any U.S. census listing, nor in web searches. While the name appears clear on the label, it was concluded that it was being misread. There was a well known photographer, Alice Boughton, living with Ida C. Haskell on Beaver Dam Road in 1930. She was a 64 year old photographer with her own studio. While primarily known as a photographer, she was known to have done some painting. It seems likely that this is the artist. Another painting by Alice Boughton may be found at the Brookhaven Free Library, and appears to be of her residence in Brookhaven.

Comment:

This interesting painting of the Miller's barn is by Raymond Perry.  It is dated 1939. The damage to the barn may have been caused by the hurricane of Sept 21, 1938, George Miller was still active in farming until he died in 1948.

Raymond Perry was a well know illustrator and art editor, whose country cottage (Historic Site ID Br05B) was a short distance from the Miller Farm.  He did several pen and ink drawings of local scenes, including the original Brookhaven Free Library (Historic Site ID Br27) and the old wooden Smith Point Bridge.  Paintings by him are relatively rare.  This is the only known painting of a Brookhaven scene.

Comment: From "Miller Family Photographs." In front, Ellen (Carman) Miller, Nathaniel Miller. In back, son Nathaniel Clinton Miller. While the photograph identifies the man at the back as Nathaniel Clinton, I think it more likely that the individual is George, who was living in his parents household. N. Clinton was married and had his own household. (I would like to verify.)
