Comment: The two older adults in chairs are Parnell Rose nee Reeve (left) and William Brewster Rose (right). The picket fence was no doubt the one along Beaver Dam road.

A similar photograph taken at the same time identifies the people as follows (left to right): "Mame? Raynor, Parnel Rose, Frank Rose, Annie Rose, Friend, Wm. Brewster Rose, Elbert Rose, Katie Rose."

Katie Rose nee Young is Elbert's wife.

I do not believe the person identified as Frank is actually Frank Rose. If the family genealogy information from other sources* is correct, Francis C. Rose was born in 1837 and died in 1842; Elbert was born in 1841 and married in 1862. I think it more likely that the person identified as Frank is actually William Brewster Rose, Jr., born in 1849. In 1862/63 he would have been 13/14, which appears to me to be about the age of the boy in the picture.

Mame? Raynor is a mystery; the name could be Marne.

Notation on the back of this photograph: "Aunt Parnal and Brewster Rose."

* I have found few genealogy references to William Brewster Rose, and only one which indicates the family. Therefore this information may be in error.

Comment: From "Early Photographs of the Hamlet of Brookhaven collected by George Perley Morse."
Caption reads:
Early Photos of the last of the Rose Family in Fireplace - A Little Family History. From left to right:
(1) Grace Barteau - married Coast Guardsman Frank Corwin. Her father was Stephen Barteau of Cedar Farms and mother was Ida Mavene.
(2) Lizzie Bennett - a summer boarder no doubt at the Raynor House.
(3) Mamie Barteau - married Stephen Raynor (So. Country Rd.) and was a sister of Grace (above).
(4) Parnel Reeve Rose - sister to John D. Reeves, a well-educated shoemaker (father of Forrest P. Reeves).
(5) William Brewster Rose - married Parnel Rose (above). Son of Joseph Rose, fourth son of Jesse Rose.
(6) John L. Rose - son of William William Brewster Rose, married Susan Clark, daughter of Mills Clark.
(7) William Mills rose - married Lotty Rose, daughter of George Rose and Jenny Romer. (George Rose was son of David, who lived in Bellport.)

NOTE: The people are standing in front of Captain (Navy) John Tuthill's house, as it looked originally.

Comment: This is a picture of the William Brewster Rose house following the September 21, 1938 hurricane. Brookhaven Hamlet was at the western edge of significant damage. At the time the house was the residence of the Soper family. The family lived in the Tuthill house from 1937, until about 1947. According to Sally Soper Neenan, who was age one at the time of the storm, a corner of her bedroom was destroyed.
