Comment: From Bigelow: "A Brookhaven boarding house of note was the Edgewater Inn, run by Mrs. Rachael D'Arcas*. It had been the Smith Rose home, built in 1820. Among the guests were Mme. Maeterlinck, Conde Nast, Edna Woolman Chase and Frank Crowninshield. The Inn was completely destroyed by fire about 1930 [May 1928]."

In 1912, The Edgewater Inn charged $10-12 per week, and could accomodate 35 people.

Comment: Rachael de Arcas ran the inn from about 1897 to 1924, spending her Winters in Cuba and Summers at the Edgewater. She had sold the property before it burned in 1928.

Mrs. Rachael de Arcas (Rachael Purdy de Arcas) was Mrs. Santiago de Arcas' (Amy B. Smith de Arcas') mother-in-law. Amy de Arcas ran the Fire Place Inn (Smith House, Historic Structure Br08). Family members report that Amy probably had little to do with the Edgewater Inn "as it seems Amy and Rachael didn't get along."
