Comment:

Looking west. On one copy of this post card it reads: "McKeown sisters. Circa 1905."

This is one of my favorite pictures of the Hamlet -- catching, I suppose, my romantic view of what the Hamlet must have been like at the beginning of the 20th century.

Rick Frazier comments on the picture: " I have been told it’s a photo of my grandmother Elsie McKeown and her sister, both of which grew up on Bay Avenue in Brookhaven. Their parents were William and Anna Knies McKeown. I think some of the relatives, Bulls I think, still live in the area, possibly in the same house. I was shown this photo when I was younger and told it was on the cover, or somewhere in, Harpers Magazine early in the last century, but I have lost touch with it.

Comment: Beaver Dam Creek was also known as Valentine's Brook, after the proprietor of the Brookhaven General Store at the time. I think this picture is probably one of the the old Miller trout ponds, this one on the south side of South Country Road, looking north. South Country Road appears to be curving to the left, and a large sign can barely be seen – the only word I can make out is "… East" (you have to blow up the picture to see it). Notice the dike along the right side of the brook, containing the pond. If I have the location correct, the Miller house (Br30C) would be to the right and the Brook Store (Br07) would be to the left. The Miller trout pond is no longer present. The area is now the small park at the intersection of South Country and Fire Place Neck Roads.

Comment: In this post card, the Fraser-Champlain house (left, Historic Structure ID Br29) and the Badetty-Petretti House (right, Br29A) are clearly visible. The "ancient oak tree" which long stood in front of the St. James Church (Br28A) is visible center left; the church itself is barely visible to the left of the Badetty house. The post card was addressed to Mr. Harry Morrow in Philadelphia, from Mrs. William Robinson ("Having a dandy time.") Harry Morrow may be Harry D. Morrow (b. 1884), son of Thomas Irwin Morrow, Sr. and Elizabeth Mary Gahan. This postcard, acquired through an Ebay auction in June 2004, was not found in the Post-Morrow Foundation collection.

Comment:

Probably looking north from the Beaver Dam Road bridge, and likely at low tide. Compare to modern Image ID 170, above, which was taken at high tide.

The seller of this post card when auctioned on Ebay dated it 1924, perhaps from a post mark. I've bid on it, but it is not yet won. (1/25/2005)
