Notes:
Woodland Cemetery is in the north part of the Village of Bellport, on the west side of the Station Road at the intersection with Head of the Neck Rd.
In 1865, people in Bellport decided they wanted a cemetery. John Post was chairman of the first meeting, which formed the cemetery association, taking the name Woodland. For the sum of one dollar John W. Titus and Edward Osborne with his wife Catherine deeded eight acres for the beginning of Woodland Cemetery. Remains, headstones and the Soldiers' Monument were moved there from the old graveyard on Academy Lane. On this Monument are recorded the names of four young men who lost their lives in the Civil War, but who were never brought home for interment. They were Charles Homan, aged 23, William Osborn aged 20, Jesse Munsell aged 21 and E. Thompson Cooper aged 22, son of the esteemed Dr. Cooper, pastor of both Bellport and South Haven Presbyterian Churches. It is therefore evident that any stones in this Cemetery with death dates prior to 1865 have been moved in from other graveyards.
The first burial in this Cemetery was that of Irene, wife of John Robinson, who died 19 July 1869.
In addition to Bellport residents, many residents of Brookhaven and South Haven Hamlets chose to be buried in this cemetery. Individual stones from small family cemeteries in the two Hamlets were also relocated to this cemetery. It is #28 in the Town of Brookhaven Historians Cemetery Inventory. Mailing Address: PO Box 185, Bellport, New York 11713 Phone: (631) 286-0095.
Unlike the family cemeteries and burial grounds in Brookhaven and South Haven Hamlets, no attempt is being made to do a full survey of this cemetery. Rather, as time and energy permit, gravestones of known residents of Brookhaven and South Haven Hamlets will be documented.

#028.Burnett — Burnett Cemetery Plot .. There is strong evidence of a Burnett Cemetery plot at Woodland Cemetery. A cemetery deed was found in the papers of George Hubert & Francis Jagger Burnett's grand daughter, Ann. Frances Jagger Burnett purchased a large plot #227, being 28 ft. by 28 ft 6 in. containing 798 superficial feet. The date on the Deed is April 6th 1893, two days after George Hubert Burnett died. That Frances Jagger Burnett and George H. Burnett, Sr. are buried there seems very likely, and there is a good chance that children George H. Jr., Isaac, Henry Theron and Ann Frances are also buried there. However, searches of the cemetery have not found any Burnett gravestones. |
