#022.Hawkins: Frances (Woodhull) Hawkins, wife of the Rev. Nathaniel Hawkins She was said to have been first interred in the Nathaniel Hawkins cemetery (B039) in Brookhaven Hamlet, NY. Later, this monument, located next to that of her husband, was erected at the Yaphank Village Cemetery (B022), Yaphank, NY. It is uncertain as to whether her remains were disinterred. It is interesting to note that the much more modest gravestone for the Rev. Nathaniel Hawkins' second wife, Diedamia Booth, can now be found at the Oaklawn Cemetery (B021), Brookhaven Hamlet NY. She died twenty-four years after his death, and they had no issue. |

#022.Hawkins: Rev. Nathaniel Hawkins & son Abram It is said that Nathaniel was first interred in the Barteau Cemetery (B029), Brookhaven Hamlet, NY. Later, this monument was erected in the Yaphank Village Cemetery (B022), Yaphank, NY. I think the source may have confused two nearby cemeteries in Brookhaven Hamlet. I think it likely that he was first interred in the Nathaniel Hawkins (named after his father) family cemetery (B039). The two cemeteries are nearly across the street from each other. |

#022.Wrangen: Suomi Wrangen-Owen gravestone .. the inscription on her gravestone, "AKSELIN TYTAR," is Finnish. Tytär means "daughter." Akselin may therefore be her birth surname in Finnish, the phrase having the meaning "Akselin's daughter." This interpretation is based on a Google.com translation, and should not be taken as definitive. |

#49.01 Isaac Homan While Isaac Homan was recorded on the Town of Brookhaven Historian's cemetery inventory (c. 1939) [S98] as having a headstone in the Barteau Cemetery (#B029), I have a suspicion that he was never interred in there, but always interred in the Yaphank Baptist Cemetery. I think there may have been a clerical error when the entry was recorded in the Town Historian's database -- cemetery 029 was entered instead of 049. Other such errors were known to have occurred. A survey of the old Baptist Cemetery conducted by Dayton and Carter in 1971 found Isaac Homan there. My understanding is that by 1939 when the Town survey was conducted, the Yaphank Baptist Cemetery was largely abandoned. It seems unlikely that a gravestone would be moved there between 1939 and 1971. The Town Historian's office still has the original cemetery inventory work sheets, which I plan to consult. |
