Joseph De Monge of Brookhaven, age 87, died Saturday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Wallace Swezey, death being attributed to hardening of the arteries. He had been run down by an automobile two months previously and sustained a fracture of the leg which confined him to Miss Hughes' hospital, Patchogue, several weeks, since when he had gone about on crutches. He was very popular in Brookhaven, and commonly known as "Uncle Joe," being a farmer, and active up to the time of his accident. He was born in France and came to this country when a boy.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from Ruland's funeral chapel, Patchogue, with interment in the Brookhaven cemetery, the Rev. George F. Baker of Stony Brook and Brookhaven officiating. Mr. De Monge leaves his sister, Mrs. Swezey and several nieces and nephews, among whom are Mrs. Thomas Poole, Mrs. Julian Rose, Miss Leila Swezey and Frederick Swezey of Brookhaven, Mrs. Robert Morton of Patchogue, Mrs. Robert Rail of New Jersey, and Fletcher Swezey of New Haven.

The one-story building on Beaver Dam road at the head of Meadow lane which has been occupied as a store for many years, is being remodeled into a dwelling. The owner, Mrs. Sherman Hawkins of Southampton, is having Samuel Bumstead do the carpentry work. The last person to operate a store there was Julien Rose.

... folks around here played musical houses in the summers. My grandparents leased this house [on Old Stump road] and moved all the way to Hawkins Lane for summers. My grandfather, who was a bayman, had a shack for his nets, etc., which is what they moved to—that shack eventually became the home of Julien and Viola Rose and then Charles and Toni Koop [their daughter and son-in-law]. All the land down Hawkins Lane was a one time owned by Wallace Swezey. Wallace was fond of selling land; Addie [his wife] made him deed lots down Hawkins Lane to each of the children. As the children became adults they sold, swapped, combined, whatever the lots. That is why when I was growing up three of Addie's children—Viola, Beatrice, Emma—lived down there. ... Ellen Learned ... was close with her neighbors the Julien Rose family, and left to Antoinette (Toni) Rose Koop her collection of blue and white Canton ware aka Chinese export porcelain. Aunt Toni gave the collection to me before her death. Unfortunately, many of the plates are in chipped condition; at some point in time they were put in metal holders and hung on a wall. Those old metal holders did awful stuff to the plate rims. They are not suitable for display but I can't bring myself to get rid of them.
