- She was recorded as the head of household. Recorded in her household were Mary Ash (30, daughter), John Ash (10, son), Sam Ash (8, son), Mary Ash (6, daughter), and Ellen Ash (4, daughter). The were recorded adjacent to the Nathaniel Miller, Jr. family.
From this record I have inferred that John, Sam, Mary, and Ellen were actually Nancy's grandchildren. Stephen Howard was not recorded, suggesting that he may have died before 1880.

- In the 1870 census, Nancy was recorded with "Howard" as her surname, and Sarah was no longer in the household. Nancy may have died, and Stephen and Nancy may now have a spousal relationship; or perhaps Nancy was an "adopted" daughter and taken the surname Howard. Unfortunately, it was not until 1880 that household relationships were recorded in the census.
For the purposes of the present record, Nancy is entered as a spouse.
