- At Sarah's marriage to John Conklin, she was the widow of William Salmon, and was William's second wife.
William Salmon had been proprietor of Hashamomack in the Town of Southold. They promptly removed to his estate. (Mann). Salmon had had claims to lands in Oyster Bay and Queens Village which passed to Sarah and his children on his death. In 1666, letters of administration were granted to John Conklin for Salmon's estate; but, through a long series of court battles the Salmon claims were finally denied Gov. Nicoll of New York, even though some commentators assert that the Salmon claims were stronger.
There are some, including contempories, who assert that John Conklin's marriage to Sarah was opportunistic. Yet those who have studied the litigation records find little to suggest that the Conklin's interest was other than that of Solmon's children and heirs.
