Joanna Loops records: "Perhaps the oldest man ever celebrating a marriage in Southold, at least the oldest so far as can be learned, was Jonathan Goldsmith Horton, who at the age of 81 years and 6 months was united in matrimony to widow Bethiah Overton Brown, aged 66. Mr. Horton, or 'Uncle Goopie,' as everybody called him, was the sixth direct Jonathan to live in the 'old castle' on the home lot of Barnabas Horton, who in 1640 built his home where George C. Terry's house now stands, corner of Horton Lane and Main street. Uncle Goopie was Drum Major of the 107th Regiment, N. Y. Militia, in 1812, and Deputy Sheriff of Suffolk County in 1814.
"In this old Horton House occured a double marriage in the year 1706, viz., Henry Tuthill to Bethiah Horton, and Daniel Tuthill to Mehetabel Horton Henry and Daniel were brothers and grandsons of the first John Tuthill of Southold, and Bethiah and Mehetabel were granddaughters of the first Barnabas Horton.
"This Bethiah Horton who married Henry Tuthill was great-great-grandmother to Mrs. Anna Harrison, wife of President William Henry Harrison." (Long Island Traveler, Friday, September 3, 1909, pg. 918.)
