  	He inherited these lands upon the death of his grandfather, Zachariah Hawkins. Zachariah was one of the early proprieters of the Town of Brookhaven, and acquired meadow lots 36 and 43 as part of the first division of lots in the Old Purchase at South in 1664. These lots were eventually extended to include upland lots.

  	He " bid seventy pounds thurtene shilling in monny for little neck & meadowe at south' on 15 May 1716. He was likely living "at South" when this deal was made, for at the 2 May 1716 meeting authorizing the auction it was agreed that "Iustis Brewster shall haue liberty & asoshats to haue a pound & pare of stoxs att South." He had cattle there at the time, and needed to impound them. Also, "his asoshats" implies that there were others living at South Haven and near it who would benefit by this action permitting erection of a pound; it was also necessary to build a "pare of stoxs" for branding the cattle. At the town meeting held 5 May 1724, the people voted that Nathaniel Brewster should have the stream called Beaver Dam on which to build a grist mill and fulling mill to be begun within two years and the right to the stream to be his and his heirs, but only as long as it was used for mill purposes, otherwise to revert to the town. He was then 65 years old and it was likely that after securing the grant for the stream, he considered it too great an undertaking to build and maintain a mill and dam at his age in life and that he dropped the project. At any rate, on the 25th of March 1742, the trustees regranted Beaver Dam River north of John Hulse's land, to William Helme, Jr. for a grist mill on the same conditions as given in the former grant.
