- Suffolk County News, 6 January 1928: "The Methodist Church of Brookhaven is without a pastor and during the past week it has become known that the Rev. Maynard C. Spahr, who has been in charge of the parish for several years, has been missing since Dec. 19th. It is said that Mr. Spahr had informed the official board that he would not return to the church at the close of the conference year on April 1st. The members of his church have been pleased with Mr. Spahr's work and he was held in high esteem. He was well known as a song leader and visited other churches in that capacity and was prominently identified with the Ku Klux Klan. When Mr. Spahr left Brookhaven it was thought that he was to be gone for only a short time but on Friday, Mrs. Spahr, who has been taking charge of church affairs during her husband's absence, left to go to Pittsburgh and members of the congregation seem to think that they will not return to Brookhaven."
