St. James Episcopal Church
St. James Episcopal Church
.. this congregation was organized about 1870, and this building erected in 1874. A new steeple was added in 1961. Of interest in this drawing is the ancient oak tree in front of the church; this tree became diseased and had to be cut down in 1995. Therefore the drawing likely was completed prior that date.

Suffolk Club clubhouse.
Suffolk Club clubhouse.

.. SH13: The Suffolk Club was a fishing and hunting reserve originally formed by Daniel Webster, Martin Van Buren and others about 1827 on land first leased, then purchased from the Carman family. Club membership was limited to 15. Each member had private rooms in the club house, which were individually furnished to the member's taste. The "cellar" was said to be very fine, and the kitchen was said to have been superb. Women were not allowed in the club house, although some members built residences nearby for the convenience of their families, who were said to have use of the grounds.

Valentine's Brook
Valentine's Brook

.. Br01.1-S. Now principally known as Beaver Dam Creek, or occasionally as Fire Place Creek, during a relatively short period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was known as Valentine's Brook, after Jacob Lewis Valentine, proprietor of the "Brook Store," which was situated on the shore of the creek nearby to the east of this picture.  The post card was likely produced by Valentine and sold in his store.

This is a view of the lower or Miller trout pond, looking north toward South Country road. The Miller farm was to the right. The pond has been filled and is now the site of the Fire Place (aka Zimmer) vest pocket park. The upper trout pond (later known as the Wellington trout pond) was on the other side of South Country road and can be seen in the post card of the Brook House restaurant patio.

Valentine's Corner
Valentine's Corner

.. Br06A.1-S. "Valentines Corner" was the name for the intersection of South Country and Fire Place Neck Roads for a relatively short period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was named for Jacob Lewis Valentine who was the proprietor of the nearby Brook Store (and likely publicized the name). It is now known as 'Memorial Park." Immediately to the west is Beaver Dam Creek, also know for a while as Valentine's Creek. This image, by the well known Bellport photographer Frances H. Toms, is looking east along South Country Road.
