#021.068.Rose00: Rose family plot.

.. all the persons at this lot were first interred at the former Rose/Swezey cemetery at Library lane & Beaver Dam road, and removed here by James H. Post. Post owned the property on Beaver Dam road in Brookhaven, NY, and intended to donate the site to the Brookhaven Free Library for a community library. Before he could do so, he had to relocate the little Rose family cemetery. The library's founding date is officially given as 1912, however the building was not erected until 1926; therefore this is likely about the date that the graves were moved here.

#021.072.Homan12: Jonathan Howel gravestone
#021.072.Homan12: Jonathan Howel gravestone
.. he was first interred in the Homan Private Cemetery, South Haven, NY. By the late 1930's his headstone, and perhaps his remains, were re-interred in the Oaklawn Cemetery.

A notation in the Oaklawn cemetery records reads: "Child of Silas & Hannah Homan, name worn off stone: Jonathan Howel." The meaning of this notation is difficult to understand. The stone is clearly readable. The stone appears to be old, was damaged and repaired at some point, and therefore likely not a replacement for an earlier gravestone. But most importantly, because of his age, Jonathan clearly could not have been a child of Silas and Hannah Homan. Possibly the notation originally referred to the Nancy Homan gravestone (#021.072.Homan11), and it's association with Jonathan Howel was due to a transcription error when names were transferred from older records to the more modern card files.

In actuality, Jonathan Howell likely was Mordecai Homan's brother-in-law (#021.072.Homan07); Jonathan's sister Charity Howell was Mordecai's wife.
