#79.02.1 Samuel Carman, Sr., 2003
#79.02.1 Samuel Carman, Sr., 2003

.. he may have been a Loyalist (or neutral) who came to South Haven about 1780 (probably from Hempstead, NY) and purchased the South Haven mills from Ebenezer Homan. In addition to being proprietor of the mills, he became a prominent merchant, hotel keeper, and farmer. The family appears to have eventually owned much of the land along the west side of the river (then known as the Connecticut) from north near Yaphank to the south near its mouth on the Great South Bay.

His gravestone shown here had been knocked over by a fallen tree. It has been repaired and reset as part of the 2009 cemetery restoration.

His eldest daughter, Hannah, married William Smith "Tangier" (aka Point Billy). William claimed ownership of the river itself and it is said to have renamed it in her honor as the Carman's River. Hannah is buried in the Smith cemetery at the Manor of St. George in Mastic.

.. was the sole male heir to his father's estate. He became a prominent businessman in his own right. Said to be very personable, he promoted his hotel and the Carman lands along the river as a destination for sportsman. Eventually, he leased (later the family sold), a large tract to a group of wealthy New York City sportsmen who established the Suffolk Club. He was active in politics, and for many year was a Trustee of the Town of Brookhaven, serving for a while as its president.

#79.04.2. Samuel Carman Jr. gravestone restored
.. sometime after 2003, a large tree fell in the cemetery, smashing his gravestone. With the valuable assistance of the Suffolk County Parks Department, the tree was removed. Fortunately careful excavation work by the volunteers working to restore the cemetery were able to recover the pieces, and the stone mason was able to repair the monument—albeit not to its orginaly condition.

This gravestone is the oldest currently identifiable memorial in the South Haven Church cemetery. Her death occurred shortly after the Parish of South Haven was established. The quality of her gravestone suggests that she or her family were of means.

This photograph was taken in 1987. By 2005, the monument has been totally destroyed or stolen. NOTHING remains that is identifiable!

While a record of this headstone was found in the documentation for the c. 1939 Town of Brookhaven Historians cemetery inventory, it could not be found in 2007. In September 2013, members of the Fire Place History Club conducted a clean-up of the site. Knowing that Hannah's gravestone was inventoried in the late 1930's, they probed the site and found it buried beneath several inches of soil, likely near where it fell. With further probing, they found and excavated the base.
