Less detail
Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Augustus Gardiner, ^ was born about 1793 in Bridgehampton, Southampton, Suffolk, NY (son of James Gardiner, > and Charity Howell, >); and died.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: 4 Oct 1824–ABT May 1828, Fire Place & South Haven, Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY; postmaster
    • Census: 1840, Southampton, Suffolk, NY
    • Occupation: Abt 1840, Bridgehampton, Southampton, Suffolk, NY; hotel keeper

    Notes:

    Augustus Gardiner is included in this database because he was reported to have been one of the early postmasters for Fire Place. Little other evidence has so far been found of his residency in the area. However, other likely candidates have not been found; his relatively short tenancy as postmaster suggests that he did not reside long in South Haven or Fire Place, NY.

    Augustus Gardiner was a direct descendent of Lion Gardiner, original proprietor and Lord of Gardiner's Island.

    Census:
    This is the only census record found of an Augustus Gardiner residing in Suffolk County, NY in the early 19th century. While it seems reasonable to assume that he was the Augustus who was postmaster in South Haven & Fire Place, the evidence is tenuous.

    In his household were four persons as follows:
    Free White Persons - Males - 40 thru 49: 1; Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 14: 1; Free White Persons - Females - 20 thru 29: 1; Free White Persons - Females - 30 thru 39: 1; Persons Employed in Commerce: 1.

    [There was an A. H. Gardiner living in the Town of Southampton in 1830. In this household were: Free White Persons -
    Males - Under 5: 1; 10 thru 14: 1 ; 40 thru 49: 1;
    Females - Under 5: 1; 5 thru 9: 1; 10 thru 14: 1; 15 thru 19: 1; 30 thru 39: 1.]
